The release of the “native” messenger client for Windows took place in August 2022 after a long period of beta testing. The WhatsApp team began giving 4 weeks’ notice of this move by displaying a countdown right on the home screen. The shutdown of WhatsApp Desktop was not unexpected. Users can either download the new client from the Microsoft Store, or limit themselves to the web version of WhatsApp Web in a browser as a workaround. It is noted that this move is aimed at providing an optimized, stable and rich messaging experience on desktop devices. When trying to open this version of WhatsApp Desktop, PC users are prompted to upgrade to the new WhatsApp application, native to Windows. The WhatsApp team has officially abandoned the desktop application of the popular messenger, created on the basis of the Electron framework.
